Dao -- An interactive knowledge base, natural language interpreter. Copyright (C) March 25, 2009, Ramin Honary

This program is my first attempt to re-write my entire Master's thesis as a Haskell program. It was initially written in C, and then when I realized I couldn't finish my project in time making it in C, I switched to Perl. I completed my thesis, but I was largely unsatisfied with my work and continued to make improvements. Then I discovered Haskell and decided it was the best way to make it work. I would like to publish the work I have completed so far so I can continue to make improvements publicly and with an open source license, the GPL.

Dao is an artificial intelligence program which allows users to construct a knowledge base for intepreting natural language input. The idea is to let users interactively build their own knowledge base by adding rules at runtime. The state of the knowledge base can be updated by enacting it's own production rules, or by a user entering commands to alter the state directly. Regular-expression-like patterns are associated with rules so natural language input can be used to invoke rules at any time.

Because the knowledge base is built interactively, it is very simple to define a new regular expression production rule and test it out immediately, to see if it interferes with other production rules in the knowledge base, or to see if the regular expression was defined correctly.

A future release of this program should be able to deduce regular expressions and production rules without requiring the users to define regular expressions directly.
